What is Baby Led Weaning?

Baby-led weaning (BLW) is an approach to introducing solid foods to infants by empowering them to take control of their feeding experience from the very beginning.

Unlike traditional weaning methods, where purees and spoon-feeding are common, baby-led weaning allows babies to explore and experiment with solid foods at their own pace, typically starting around six months of age when they show signs of readiness.

The core principle of baby-led weaning is to let babies feed themselves from the family table, offering them appropriately sized pieces of food that they can grasp and bring to their mouths independently. Instead of being spoon-fed by caregivers, babies are encouraged to explore the taste, texture, and appearance of a variety of foods through self-feeding.

The key aspects of baby-led weaning include:

  • Readiness Signs: Babies should be able to sit up unsupported and show an interest in reaching for food, as well as displaying the ability to grasp objects and bring them to their mouths, Tum Tum perfectly sized and weighted cutlery sets are perfect for this.
  • Whole Foods: Foods offered during baby-led weaning are typically presented in their whole form or cut into manageable pieces, allowing babies to practice their fine motor skills and develop hand-eye coordination. Carrot sticks and Broccoli florets are great examples.
  • Parental Guidance: While babies are encouraged to explore foods independently, caregivers play a crucial role in ensuring a safe eating environment. Tum Tum weighted straw cups ensure a steady flow of fluid which helps with safety and ease.
  • Responsive Feeding: Baby-led weaning encourages babies to self-regulate their food intake, trusting their hunger and fullness cues rather than being encouraged to finish a predetermined amount of food. Tum Tum bowls and plates are perfectly sized for little hands and tummies!
  • Variety and Texture: Babies are exposed to a wide variety of tastes, textures, and flavors from the family diet, helping to expand their palate and foster a positive relationship with food. It so much fun seeing your little ones on this new journey!
  • Safety Precautions: Caregivers should be mindful of potential choking hazards and ensure that foods are prepared and served in a manner that minimizes the risk of choking. Finger size/shape foods are best to encourage grip and a sucking/nibbling style of eat.

Baby-led weaning is not only a method of introducing solids but also a philosophy that promotes independence, autonomy, and a positive attitude towards food.
